ENVIS Network

ENVIS Subjects

The Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change (MoEF&CC) has implemented a Central Sector Scheme entitled Environmental Information System (ENVIS), with the purposes of collection, collation, storage, retrieval and dissemination of information relating to a variety of themes associated with Environment Sector. ENVIS was set up as a Central Scheme in December 1982 (Sixth Plan).

The network presently consists of 69 Centres , of which 29 Centres which deal with “State of the Environment and Related Issues” are hosted by the Environment/ Forest Department of State Governments/ UT Administrations. Remaining 40 Centres, hosted by environment-related governmental and non-governmental organisations/ institutes of professional excellence, have a thematic mandate. During the year 2015-16, the ENVIS Centres put together, witnessed over one crore forty lakhs hits and it is growing.

The complete ENVIS Network can be accessed here.

The ENVIS Network has been broadly classified in 5 thematic categories apart form 29 State ENVIS Centers. The 5 thematic categories are as follows:

ECOLOGY & ECO-SYSTEM SERVICES: “This entire planet is our home. We are the only species that systematically destroy our own habitat.”- Marianne Williamson
Ranging from the mighty Himalayas to the ever rich Western Ghats ;the Indian Ecology has been adding assets to the natural landscape of India. We have assigned 10 thematic ENVIS Centres to study and research in this area.

ENVIRONMENT & SOCIETY:“Earth provides enough to satisfy every man’s needs, but not every man’s greed.”― Mahatma Gandhi
Man and environment are inter-related. The environment influences the life of human beings and also human beings modify their environment as a result of their growth, dispersal, activities, death and decay etc. Thus all living beings including man and their environment are mutually reactive affecting each other in a number of ways and a dynamic equilibrium is possible in between the two, i.e. human beings (society) and environment are interdependent.

ENVIRONMENT & TECHNOLOGY:“If you wish to bear fruits you must go to your roots.”
The consequences of our technological choices— products, processes, and systems—are coming into focus. The historical record demonstrates that technological decisions have both desirable and unpredictable impacts upon human health and the vitality of the environment. We have 9 Thematic ENVIS Centers assigned on different themes falling in this category

ENVIRONMENT & POLICY"You must be the change you wish to see in the world."— Mahatma Gandhi
Environment plays a pivotal role in human life as well as in the development of society. With growing technological advancement and industrialization, the purity of the environment has been threatened to an appalling extent. The need to protect and improve the environment is so compelling for the peaceful survival of mankind and other life forms on planet Earth that right to environment has emerged as a human right. We have 5 Thematic ENVIS Centers assigned on different themes falling in this category

BIO-DIVERSITY:“One person alone cannot save the planet’s biodiversity, but each individual’s effort to encourage nature’s wealth must not be underestimated.”- United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP)
INDIA is not only gifted with cultural diversity, geographical diversity, social diversity and climatic diversity but also adorned with biodiversity which broadly includes land biodiversity and marine biodiversity. Its geographical position on globe is suitable to achieve latitudinal variation as well as altitudinal variation in giving birth to varied number of indigenous flora and fauna. India contains 8%of world species in only 2.4% area of world. Moreover ,in about 34 biological hotspots spread all over the world three lies in India i.e. Western Ghats, North-East India and Himalayan region. We have 8 Thematic ENVIS Centers assigned on different themes falling in this category

ENVIS Library-Publication

The ENVIS Centres have been working since its inception on publication of feature rich publications which have subsequently generated an extensive library of information at ENVIS Cell.

The complete list of publications/newsletters for the year 2015-16 can be accessed at this LINK

Here we have presented a library slider to showcase some of the feature rich publications of ENVIS Network centers

ENVIS Databases

ENVIS Centre update and maintain an information database that includes descriptive information and numerical data for suitable dissemination. Descriptive information are maintained in the form of bibliographies, libraries, copies/ reprints/ abstracts of reports, articles, and research notes, and links to other databases/ networks, while numerical data on the subject/ theme assigned to the Centre. All information thus compiled are made available on the Centre’s website, which can also be accessed through the ENVIS Portal.

Some of the Databases maintained by ENVIS Center have been listed here:

ISBEID

ISBEID is being developed with the objective to help State Government/ UT Centres to collect, compile and disseminate environmental information on a centralised server, covering gaps with respect to various environment-related parameters like pollution, biodiversity, waste management, etc. The State/UT ENVIS Centres is tasked with collecting data from line Departments of the States/UTs, and other sources as relevant, and updating the same into the modules of ISBEID through its web application.

The various modules of ISBEID correspond to various environment-related parameters. The ISBEID application is primarily intended to provide (a) internet-based GIS application, (b) one-stop information source to users, (c) interactive maps capable of handling operations like zoom in/out, pan, print, measure etc., and (d) querying ISBEID interactively. As of now, only statistical information/data are made available by the State ENVIS Centres

Visit the ISBEID link to access the website information

ENVIS Experts

ENVIS has a rich repository of EXPERTS on various themes related to ENVIRONMENT. It is mandate for every ENVIS Center to generate a list of experts based on their assigned subject.
The experts list can be accessed on the website maintained individually by the ENVIS centers. We have compiled a comprehensive database of links to these experts on the ENVIS Portal as well which can be accessed Here

The list of ENVIS EXPERTS have been broadly classified in 5 thematic categories apart form 29 State ENVIS Centers. The 5 thematic categories are as follows:
