Regional Evaluation-cum-Training Workshop for ENVIS Centres (Eastern & North-Eastern Region), 23-24 March, 2015 at Assam

A 2-day evaluation-cum-training Workshop for ENVIS Centres of Eastern and North-Eastern Region (i.e., those located in the states of Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Sikkim, Tripura, Assam, Bihar, Jharkhand and West Bengal) was held at Guwahati, Assam hosted by ENVIS Centre at Assam Science Technology and Environment, Council (ASTEC) during 23rd and 24th March, 2015. Thirty particpants from 13 ENVIS Centres— comprising both thematic and State/UT Centres— attended the Workshop.

The venue of the Workshop was NEDFi Convention Centre, Guwahati. This workshop was organised to evaluate the functioning of the ENVIS Centres as per the Guidelines of the ENVIS Scheme, framed by the Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change, Government of India. In addition to evaluation, an orientation-cum-training programme on Bhuvan Portal (a geo-spatial platform of National Remote Sensing Centre of ISRO) was also conducted by the scientist of NRSC, ISRO, Hyderabad.

Thirty delegates from 13 ENVIS Centres (8 State and 5 thematic) and 4 eminent experts from diverse fields participated in this workshop.

During the inaugural session, knowledge products were also released by Director, ASTEC, Economic Advisor, MoEF&CC and Expert members. Book on “Fly-Ash Status & Utilisation in India” by ISM, Dhanbad while ZSI, Kolkata released two mobile apps Indian postage stamp on faunal biodiversity and Insect identification method created for android smart phones.

Feedback from Experts who were part of the independent committee suggested scope for improvement which is an ongoing process.

Regional Evaluation-cum-Training Workshop for ENVIS Centres (Western Region), 16-17 February, 2015 at Nagpur, Maharashtra

A 2-day evaluation-cum-training Workshop for ENVIS Centres of Western Region (i.e., those located in the states of Maharashtra, Gujarat, Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh) was held at Nagpur, Maharashtra hosted by ENVIS Centre at CSIR-National Environmental Engineering Research Institute during 16th and 17th February, 2015. Around 30 participants of 13 thematic as well as State/UT ENVIS Centres participated in the Workshop. The Workshop was inaugurated by the Director NEERI, Dr. Satish R. Wate. Speaking on the occasion, Dr Wate stressed on the significance of environmental information as all important policy decisions hinge on the insightful information. He congratulated the Ministry for feeling the need to establish ENVIS Scheme and hoped that ENVIS will keep serving the stakeholders and public at large for their multifarious information requirements. Shri Abhay Kumar, Deputy Economic Adviser, MoEFCC said that the Ministry has roped in distinguished experts cutting across various fields to evaluate as well as advise the Centres. Among the experts who attended the Workshop for evaluation included Shri Krishna Rao T.V.P., Dr. Rajesh Gupta, Dr. A.K. Soni and Dr. Tamil Selvan. Two parallel sessions for evaluating the activities of Thematic and State ENVIS Centres were carried out in the Workshop. The second day of the Workshop was marked by a crucial training by NRSC official Shri Arul Raj on Bhuvan portal, a geospatial portal to enable the GIS-based information in the websites of the ENVIS Centres. The Workshop concluded with a thought- provoking session by experts who shared their observations and suggestions followed by comments by coordinators of ENVIS Centres.

Regional Evaluation-cum-Training Workshop for ENVIS Centres (Southern Region), 5-6 February, 2015 at Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu

A 2-day evaluation-cum-training Workshop for ENVIS Centres of Southern Region (i.e., Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh and Puducherry) was held at Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu hosted by ENVIS Centre at Institute of Forest Genetics and Tree Breeding and on 5th and 6th February, 2015. Around 50 participants of thematic as well as State/UT ENVIS Centres particpated in the Workshop. Speaking on the occasion, Economic Adviser, Shri M. Kannan stressed on the need to evolve the ENVIS Scheme as a one of the tools of Decision Support available to the Government of India for formulating various envioronmental policies and decisions. Among the experts who attended the Workshop for evaluation included Dr Rajasenan, Dr Rajaannan, Dr G Srinivas Rao, Dr. Haripriya Gundimeda and Prof. Kavikumar. Two parallel sessions for evaluating the activities of Thematic and State ENVIS Centres were carried out in the workshop. The second day of the Workshop was marked by a crucial training by NRSC officals Shri P. G. Diwakar and Shri Arul Raj on Bhuvan portal, a geospatial portal to enable the GIS-based information in the websites of the ENVIS Centres. The Workshop concluded with a thought-provoking session by experts who shared their remarks and experiences as well as the concluding address by Economic Adviser, Shri M. Kannan. A cultural programme was also conducted on the second day.

A 2-day evaluation-cum-training Workshop for ENVIS Centres in Northern Region was held at Dehradun, Uttarkhand hosted by ENVIS Centre at Forest Research Insitute on 12-13 January 2015. Around 50 participants from Northern thematic as well as State ENVIS Centres particpated in the Workshop. Speaking on the occasion, Economic Adviser, Shri M Kannan stressed on the need to evolve the ENVIS as a one of the tools for Decision support system available to the Givern of India for formulating various envioronmental policies and decisions. Among the experts who attebnded the workshop for evaluation were Professor Avinash Chandra, Professor C.R. Babu, Professor Haripriya Gundimeda, Professor Saroj Barik, Shri Vijay Lakhanpal, Shri D. P. Singh and Shri V. N. Diwakar. Three parallel sessions for evaluating the activities of 22 Thematic and State Centres were carried out in the workshop. The second day of the Workshop was marked by a crucial training by NRSA officals Shri P G Diwakar and Shri Arul Raj on Bhuvan portal. The workshop concluded with a thought-provoking session by experts who shared their remarks and concluding address by Economic Adviser.

National Interaction-cum-Evaluation Workshop for ENVIS Centres, 28-30 March, 2014 at Gangtok, Sikkim

A three-day evaluation-cum-interaction Workshop for all ENVIS Network Centres at Gangtok, Sikkim was held and hosted by ENVIS Centre at State Council of Science and Technology for Sikkim (SCSTS) on 28-30 March 2014. Around 120 senior participants from various national institutions and various State Government departments participated in the evaluation process for further strengthening the ENVIS system in the country. Speaking on the occasion, Chief Secretary of Sikkim, Shri A.K. Srivastava stressed on protection of environment and need to have strong institutional instrument for repository of database and information system which ENVIS Centres can provide. An ENVIS Android application developed by FRLHT ENVIS for on Medicinal plants was also released on the occasion. Two parallel sessions for evaluating the activities of 68 Thematic and State Centres were carried out in the National meet. Following independent experts from reputed national institutes evaluated the activities of various ENVIS centres for 2013-14: Dr. N. Ramaiah, Chief Scientist, National Institute of Oceanography (NIO); Dr. Avinash Chandra, Professor (Retd.), Centre for Energy Studies, IIT Delhi, New Delhi; Dr. Bharat H. Desai, Professor, Centre for International Legal Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi; and Dr. M.N.V. Prasad, Professor, Department of Plant Sciences, University of Hyderabad. The workshop concluded with a thought-provoking address by Ms. Vandana Aggarwal, Economic Adviser.
